  • Is it irresponsible to walk away from a sterile, steady paycheck, to do something you love?
  • Does a life of “ministry” destine one to poverty?

Here’s what this family did.

Dreading another Monday, he stayed fastened to his bed; his emotions and reasoning wrapped around the obvious “responsibilities” and “duties” that were woven into the fabric of being a Christian, a husband, and a father.

Frustrated, exhausted, and out of options, lost under the covers of insecurity, the psychological lever he had used countless times, to pry  himself away from the mattress, was becoming unwieldy and the energy it took to use it, unbearable.

Cliff knew that he couldn’t continue on the path in which he found himself. And while the paycheck he brought home fed his family, paid the bills, and gave his wife the opportunity to stay home and raise the children, the “real cost” of his success was destroying his self-esteem, family relationships, and spiritual wholeness. He was at risk of bottoming out.

“But how can you leave a ‘safe’, ‘secure’ job and go after something that had never been done before and that very few had ever heard of, all in the name of passion?” The naysayers could have scolded. “Chase the wind on your own time. You have a wife and kids to think about.”

As Cliff highlights in the show, by worldly standards, he didn’t have it all that bad: He was bringing in the money, traveling the world, and in a few years time, was on a track to inherit the family business.

Still, even with all that, Cliff knew in his heart that God wanted something more for him and his family: that there had to be more to life than the repetitious, daily fights between his *authentic self* and the *painted on man* that he at one time thought he should be. While our shows are usually around 20-30 minutes, because Cliff had so much to share about his struggles and challenges early on, this one runs about twice as long.

      Hi Sheila,

    Joel,
I finally listened to your interview with Cliff and WOW did I
connect with it! Cliff put words on quite a few things that I have
experienced. I related to what he said about feeling like I am stealing
time from work. It is crazy but sometimes I struggle to stay busy on my
day job b/c I am just not getting any new ideas and feel like I am in
fact being paid to maintain the status quo and not make waves.

I have also tried to “quit” working on my area of passion as he did.
It never lasts. It’s like plugging up a water line. Eventually it
bursts and the flow of water is restored no matter how many times or
ways I try to stop it.

I definitely think podcasting is in my plan, need to finish getting
the blog’s foundation laid first (in progress, yayy!) Also I am
intrigued by him describing what he does as being in full time
ministry… Doing your passion is your ordained, full-time ministry.
That nails it for me. Every Sunday I sit in church and feel like the
overarching message is that if I don’t give up everything I have and all
goals not related to foreign missions or whatever the
project-of-the-month is, then I have idols in my life.

Lastly, Cliff lives in Ky same as me. So I know he is a good guy. ha
ha ha! Thanks for connecting me to his material and I look forward to
exploring podcasting in the near future.

      Hi Nicole,

Thank you for listening to the podcast and for sharing.

I’m curious, is the message you are “receiving” in church related to the words the pastor is saying, or is it more about the “filter” you are using to  decode it?

  • Archie

This is a great interview with Cliff! There’s so much that is covered that is so important. Thank God for his wife who stood strong with him & challenged him to do what was on his heart. Think of the thousands of lives they are touching as a result of their decision! Thanks Joel for sharing Cliff’s story!

      Hi Colleen,

      Thank you for listening.

It’s amazing how many people can be touched, freed, and liberated, when one is true to themselves and to God.

      Stephanie is one powerful lady.

    Hi Joel,

I can defnitely relate to Cliff’s situation where he had a “comfortable” income, which made it difficult to let go of something that was not his passion.  Thanks for sharing Cliff’s interview.
