Here’s what this family did.
Dreading another Monday, he stayed fastened to his bed; his emotions and reasoning wrapped around the obvious “responsibilities” and “duties” that were woven into the fabric of being a Christian, a husband, and a father.
Frustrated, exhausted, and out of options, lost under the covers of insecurity, the psychological lever he had used countless times, to pry himself away from the mattress, was becoming unwieldy and the energy it took to use it, unbearable.
Cliff knew that he couldn’t continue on the path in which he found himself. And while the paycheck he brought home fed his family, paid the bills, and gave his wife the opportunity to stay home and raise the children, the “real cost” of his success was destroying his self-esteem, family relationships, and spiritual wholeness. He was at risk of bottoming out.
“But how can you leave a ‘safe’, ‘secure’ job and go after something that had never been done before and that very few had ever heard of, all in the name of passion?” The naysayers could have scolded. “Chase the wind on your own time. You have a wife and kids to think about.”
As Cliff highlights in the show, by worldly standards, he didn’t have it all that bad: He was bringing in the money, traveling the world, and in a few years time, was on a track to inherit the family business.
Still, even with all that, Cliff knew in his heart that God wanted something more for him and his family: that there had to be more to life than the repetitious, daily fights between his *authentic self* and the *painted on man* that he at one time thought he should be.
