Learning difficulties and a speech impediment made the uphill journey for him even steeper, as his elementary school teachers couldn’t quite understand why he had advanced upward from one grade to the next without grasping the fundamentals.
As he completed secondary education, desiring to move into college studies, his climb was not yet over; it seemed that his SAT scores were not at the level they needed to be and before he could even be considered for a state school, he would have to complete required developmental coursework.
While not easy, Kent did what he always tries to do with something he’s committed to, and that is to hang in there. And hang in there he did, as he went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree from Toccoa Falls College, and then later, a Masters from Grace University.
Feeling called to work with young people, taking a job in youth ministry, to him, “just made sense”.
Over time, he advanced through the ranks and became the national youth director for his denomination.
While Kent enjoyed many of the aspects of what he was doing, and was a pro when it came to leadership and communication, he realized that he wasn’t that great as a pastor.
And, in one of the last churches in which he worked, he began to feel the tug of a life outside of the only world he knew, vocational ministry.
Kent Julian, founder of Live it Forward and developer of the Speak if Forward Boot Camp, joins us on today’s show and shares his side of the story.
