As a frightened teenager and new wife, she found herself pregnant with their first baby.
Unprepared for marriage, ill-equipped for kids and inexperienced in life, she quickly realized that, not only was she still a child, she was also married to a child, with a child on the way.
Struggling with gas money, minimum wage jobs, and adulthood, their household grew, as two more children followed quickly thereafter.
As life spiraled downward for the young family, she and her husband were rushed off to a hospital, after he had experienced a seizure.
In the podcast, you’ll hear her tell the story of how she sat worriedly at the kitchen table, on the phone with her husband’s boss, unable to provide answers as to his availability and secretly wishing he would get up and go to work, (because they couldn’t afford for him not to).
Author Michelle Read joins us on the show and talks about a book she wrote to herself: “How to be Poor”.
- This book gives women the wisdom and tools needed to break the cycle of poverty.
Michelle also shares how, as a unified team, she and her husband were able to go from food stamps to debt freedom; all while she choose to remain at home with her kids.
